Pope Valley Response to Recent Media Coverage

May 19, 2025

Pope Valley Elementary Union School District welcomes and supports independent news coverage. However, when that coverage misrepresents facts, it becomes necessary to correct the record and provide additional context.

In the past few weeks, there has been media coverage that has mischaracterized our school and its leadership. A recently published Napa County Civil Grand Jury report acknowledged the progress made under the leadership of Superintendent Kim Kern, crediting the current administration with implementing meaningful reforms and laying a strong foundation for lasting improvement.

While the report noted past challenges under the previous Superintendents, it recognized the current leadership’s proactive steps to move forward. Crucially, the Grand Jury found no evidence of discrimination or unequal treatment toward Hispanic or Spanish-speaking families. It further commended the district’s efforts to improve communication by expanding language access through certified interpreters and Language Line services—ensuring all families are informed, engaged, and supported. Recently we announced that we have recruited a bilingual, bicultural teacher and a seasoned teacher with early childhood education expertise, further advancing our commitment to equity, academic excellence, and meeting the needs of our diverse community.

We take community concerns seriously, especially allegations of racism and discrimination. The district looks forward to investigating any and all complaints fairly and transparently. We are confident that this process will clarify the facts and help put these unfounded allegations to rest.

Our commitment remains unwavering: to provide a safe, inclusive, and high-quality educational environment for every student, and to work in partnership with all members of our community to build a stronger future together.
